A little gem, that just showed up: a concert poster for a gig in Arnhem, The Netherlands, early 1992. Apparently Skip McDonald was playing guitar, but who knows who are the 'others' mentioned on the poster?
'Boogaloo (drowning not raving mix)' is only to be found on the Japanese edition of Adrian Sherwood's brilliant debut album 'Never trust a Hippy'. This is the video for that track showing the dub master in live action. Absolute killer track!
An oldy I found on eBay: Adrian Sherwood (left) and Gary Clail, posing for photographer Beezer. From the looks of one of the lads in the background, it took quite a while before this picture was taken...
From August 2008, the documentary ON/OFF: Mark Stewart - from the Pop Group to the Maffia by Tøni Schifer will be gracing selected cinemas and film festivals. The film retraces the singer's steps and paths from the early days of The Pop Group right up to the present. Schifer, who followed Mark around for a full two years, has crafted a detailed, often intimate portrait of the artist, supplemented by interviews with a. o. Mark Stewart himself, Adrian Sherwood, Daniel Miller (Mute), Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald, Keith LeBlanc, Douglas Hart (The Jesus & Mary Chain), Fritz Catlin (23 Skidoo), Jon Spencer, Gareth Sager (The Pop Group, Rip Rig and Panic) and many others, plus live recordings and music clips. The DVD will be released by Monitorpop in october/november 2008. www.monitorpop.de
'Yeah, he can play', says SpectorBassCom on YouTube in their comments on this video, shot at the Spector Booth at NAMM in Anaheim, CA in 2006. Doug Wimbish's solo album Trippy Notes for Bass is being re-issued in March 2008. It's an extended version with several remixes - one by long time companion Adrian Sherwood.
The new Mark Stewart album 'Edit' will be released in April 2008 on Crippled Dick Hot Wax!. In Europe that is. The UK and USA have to wait another month to hear the album. To promote the album, there will be a short European Tour. Dates are to be found on Mark Stewart's MySpace.
Bernard Fowler's Bad Dog will tour in Europe in January and February, in a package with Tackhead and Little Axe. One of many remixes done by Adrian Sherwood: 'Bleibt alles Anders' by German singer Herbert Grönemeyer. Skip McDonald provided additional guitar for this one. AMS did four mixes of this track. I'm not sure which one this is. On the side: before remixing 'Bleibt alles Anders' in 1998, Sherwood also did a remix of 'Letzte Version', that same year.
Spring 2008 Mark Stewart and the Maffia will release the long awaited new album 'Edit', on the German label Crippled Dick Hot Wax!. There will also be a documentary film on DVD. AND Mark Stewart and the Maffia will be touring to promote it all. To keep you happy in the meantime: here's one from back then: 'Hysteria'.
Now this is a strange one! Keith LeBlanc drumming for Japanese singer Nokko (formerly of the band Rebecca), with Talvin Singh on the tablas. The track is called 'Apache Moon' and the quality of the recording could be better, but a nice one nontheless.
Headfake (aka Will Calhoun & Doug Wimbish from Living Colour) with guitarist Skip 'Little Axe' McDonald as a guest are recording some for a song called 'Terrorism', also performed by Living Colour. The video has been recorded in Belgium, Brussels, Studio Molière on the 2005/09/01.
Here's a nice one from The Slits, recorded at Selfridges, London in March 2006. Includes backstage Soundbites and Live Performance. The band will be touring in Japan with Adrian Sherwood(!) on the mixing desk:
* October 26, 2007: O East, Tokyo, Japan * October 28, 2007: Club Quattro, Nagoya, Japan * October 29, 2007: Big Cat, Osaka, Japan
Way back from 1984, but still funky as hell: James Brown & Afrika Bambaataa doing 'Unity' with the Sugar Hill House Band backing them, being of course Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald.
Official video for one of Asian Dub Foundation's best tracks. Is that because Adrian Sherwood was twisting the knobs? Or is it the voice of the Ghetto Priest? Anyway: great video.
Wow, check this out! Supporting the miner's strike in the UK back in the eighties, Adrian Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc recorded 'Strike' under the alias The Enemy Within. This is the official video for that track.
Bootleg video footage of one of the dub shows Adrian Sherwood did in Japan this fall with Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This was recorded on November 2 in Club Quattro in Osaka.
