'johnny was' - a MUST see!
This is a MUST for all you On-U Sound lovers out there: the film 'Johnny Was', out on DVD on September 16, with a 39 track reggae soundtrack, compiled by Adrian Sherwood, and with (having had a look at the official trailer below) a lot of his own work.
Here's a synopsis of this 2005 film from Northern Ireland, directed by Mark Hammond and with actors such as Samantha Mumba, Lennox Lewis, Patrick Bergin, Vinnie Jones, Eriq La Salle and The Who singer Roger Daltrey:
Here's a synopsis of this 2005 film from Northern Ireland, directed by Mark Hammond and with actors such as Samantha Mumba, Lennox Lewis, Patrick Bergin, Vinnie Jones, Eriq La Salle and The Who singer Roger Daltrey:
'Johnny (Vinnie Jones), trying to escape a violent past, hides out in the world's least-safe safe house, sandwiched between a crime den run by a Jamaican gangster (Eriq LaSalle) and a pirate radio station belonging to a Rasta DJ (Lennox Lewis). When Johnny's former comrade (Patrick Bergin) escapes from prison, Johnny faces being dragged back into violence and away from his new love (Samantha Mumba).
Johnny's actions ignite a simmering war on two fronts with his drug-dealing neighbor and his former boss Jimmy (Roger Daltrey). Johnny faces questions of race, morality, loyalty, and ultimately survival - played out against a great reggae sound track from legendary DJ-producer Adrian Sherwood.'

audio active - happy shopper
Official video for Audio Active's track 'Happy Shopper'. Audio Active is a Japanese trio, formed by Masa, 2DD and Nanao. They make a pumped-up rastified version of hip-hop, with heads bowed to dub wizard Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Audio Active recorded several records for the British dub label On-U Sound, owned by Adrian Sherwood. 'Happy Shopper' was one of them. The single was released in 1995.

tribute to bim sherman
One more from that load of On-U sound related pictures I found at the record fair the other day: a beautiful photo of the late Bim Sherman taken by Colin Hawkins for Mantra Recordings, the label that released Bim's brilliant album 'Miracle'.
If your not familiar with that record, go hide yourself and start shaming. Or else: try and get hold of a copy. You'll love it.
